How much of the book it covers

The movie brings the resistance forward from The Death Cure

The second movie draws mainly on The Scorch Trials, but also uses material from the third book, The Death Cure. It is not a complete, separate adaptation of book two.

Wes Ball said he approached the final two books together, moving events between them to make two connected movies. One substantial move is the Right Arm, the resistance to WCKD. It arrives in the third book but appears in the second movie, putting an organized opposition into the story before the finale.

Crossing the Scorch becomes an escape instead of an assigned test

In the book, WICKED sends the Gladers into the Scorch for another controlled trial. They have two weeks to cross it.

The movie makes Thomas discover that the apparent refuge is another WCKD facility. He and the others break out, taking Teresa with them. Their desert journey becomes a search for the Right Arm while WCKD pursues them, rather than an assignment they have been given.
