Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 6, 2026
1. What information do we collect?
When you vote without an account. Voting never needs an account. When you answer a question we store your answer, a random identifier kept in a cookie in your browser, and a scrambled (hashed) version of your IP address. The identifier and the hash let us count one vote per person and stop the same person voting many times. The hash cannot be turned back into your address.
When you create an account. Your email address, the username you choose, and your password. Passwords are handled by our sign-in provider and are never stored or seen by us in readable form.
When you use your account. What you mark as read, watched, want to read or want to watch; the lists you make; your votes; and any comments you post. When you sign in, votes you cast earlier in the same browser are attached to your account.
When you contact us. Whatever you choose to send, such as an email.
Collected automatically. Like any website, our hosting provider logs basic technical information when your browser connects, such as IP address, browser type and the page requested. This is used for security, abuse prevention and keeping the site running.
We do not collect sensitive personal information.
2. What other people can see
Comments are public and show your username. Everything else is private to you: your marks, your lists, your votes and your email address. Results on each page show only totals, never who voted for what.
3. How do we use your information?
To run the site: count votes and show results, keep your marks and lists, show your comments, sign you in, and send the emails that accounts need, such as confirming your address. Also to keep the site secure, prevent abuse and comply with the law.
We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not build profiles of you.
4. What legal bases do we rely on?
Depending on where you are, we rely on: performing our agreement with you (running your account); legitimate interests (counting votes fairly, preventing abuse, keeping the site secure); consent, which you can withdraw at any time; and legal obligations.
6. Third-party websites
Pages link to other sites, such as stores to buy or rent a book or movie, and IMDb. We are not responsible for their content or privacy practices, and anything you give them is covered by their policies, not this one.
8. How long do we keep your information?
Account information, marks, lists and comments are kept until you delete them or ask us to delete your account. Votes are kept so results stay accurate; when an account is deleted, its votes are kept only as anonymous totals. If deletion isn't immediately possible (for example, data in backups), we keep it out of use until it is deleted.
9. How do we keep your information safe?
Data is sent over encrypted connections and stored with access limited to what the site needs. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot promise that information will never be accessed without permission, but we work to prevent it.
10. Do we collect information from minors?
The site is not directed at children under 13, and you must be at least 13 to create an account. If we learn we have collected information from a child under 13, we will delete it. If you believe this has happened, email hello@booksadapted.com.
11. What are your privacy rights?
Depending on where you live (including the EEA, UK, Switzerland, Canada and certain US states), you may have the right to access, correct or delete your personal information, get a copy of it, restrict or object to how we process it, and withdraw consent. To use these rights, email hello@booksadapted.com. We will respond within 45 days.
If you are in the EEA or UK and believe we are processing your data unlawfully, you can complain to your local data protection authority.
12. Do-Not-Track
There is no agreed standard for responding to browsers' Do-Not-Track signals, so we do not respond to them. We do not track you across other sites in any case.
13. US residents: specific rights
If you live in a US state with its own privacy law (including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and others), you may have the right to know what we hold about you, access it, correct it, delete it, get a copy, and not be treated differently for using these rights.
We do not sell or share personal information for targeted advertising, and have not done so. No opt-out is needed because none takes place. If we deny a request, you can appeal by emailing hello@booksadapted.com; if the appeal is denied, you may contact your state attorney general.
14. Updates to this policy
We may update this policy. The date at the top shows the latest version. If a change is significant, we will say so on the site or tell you directly.
