The last book becomes a rescue mission

The movie completes the original trilogy in one final film. It draws mainly on The Death Cure, after the second movie had already used some of that book’s resistance story. Ball said the two sequels rearranged the final two books rather than adapting each in isolation.

The novel begins with an offer to restore the survivors’ memories. Thomas and his friends refuse and escape from WICKED. The movie instead opens with an organized attempt to rescue Minho and makes breaking into the Last City its central mission. The telepathy and body-control technology in the book do not carry over.

The finale leaves the book’s Maze behind

The novel brings the story back to the Maze for its climax. The movie stays with the assault on the Last City and the collapse of WCKD’s stronghold.

The city’s resistance attacks from outside its walls while Thomas’s group tries to get the captives out of WCKD. Their mission continues through the destruction of the city.
