Divergent: Books vs. Movies

The three Divergent movies, released between 2014 and 2016, are adapted from Veronica Roth's three books, published between 2011 and 2013. Each book has its own page here; this is where you vote for the series as a whole.

The last movie was never made

The plan was to split Allegiant into two movies. Only the first came out, so the movies never reach the end of the books.

Insurgent (2015)Insurgent (book 2), with a reworked plot
Allegiant (2016)The first part of Allegiant (book 3)

The fourth movie, Ascendant, never happened, so the books' ending has never been filmed. Roth has said she never saw a clear plan for how that movie would have ended.

Four: A Divergent Collection tells parts of the story from Tobias's side. It goes alongside the trilogy and hasn't been filmed.

Insurgent's secret goes in a box

The movie of Insurgent invents a box that holds the secret everyone is chasing. It isn't in the book. Director Robert Schwentke said the box helped squeeze the book's plot into one movie. He also made the simulations bigger, so more of what Tris goes through in her head could be shown on screen.

There's a new version of Tris's story

Roth's The Sixth Faction, out October 6, 2026, retells Divergent in an alternate universe: a tragedy changes the choice Beatrice makes, and her story goes somewhere else. It isn't a sequel, and it isn't the missing ending to the movies.
