Fern saves the smallest pig in a litter and names him Wilbur, but growing up means moving to her uncle's barn. There he befriends Charlotte, a spider who learns that he is being raised for slaughter. On the Zuckermans' farm, Wilbur learns that being well fed is no guarantee of a long life. His friend Charlotte promises to help, using words woven into her web to change the farmer's plans. Barnyard songs, an unwilling rat's errands and preparations for the county fair accompany the animals' effort to make an ordinary pig seem extraordinary.
