Which books each season covers
The later seasons take a different path from the later books
| Season | Book adapted |
|---|---|
| 1 | You, book 1, following Joe and Beck in New York. |
| 2 | Hidden Bodies, book 2, loosely adapted with a different ending. |
| 3 | An original story in Madre Linda. It shares the library setting and a librarian love interest with You Love Me, book 3, but does not follow that book’s plot. |
| 4 | An original murder mystery in London, rather than the Harvard story in For You and Only You, book 4. |
| 5 | An original conclusion that brings Joe back to New York. It is not an adaptation of For You and Only You. |
| A guide, not an exact match: shows move scenes and storylines between books and seasons. | |
The series ended with season 5. The stories of You Love Me and For You and Only You have not been adapted as full seasons. In the third book, Joe moves to an island in the Pacific Northwest; in the fourth, he joins a writing fellowship at Harvard.
Kepnes has also written You First, a prequel about Joe at seventeen, published in June 2026 after the series ended. It has not been adapted by this show.

Hidden Bodies ends with a different kind of confinement
Hidden Bodies ends with Joe in prison. Season 2 instead leaves him married to a pregnant Love and moving into the suburbs. The series also reveals Love as a killer who knows what Joe has done and accepts him.
Gamble described that ending as another kind of imprisonment for Joe: he is trapped in the relationship he pursued. It sets up a domestic life for the next season instead of following the circumstances at the end of the book.
How it was adapted
The college idea traveled between author and showrunner
Joe becomes a London lecturer in season 4, while the fourth book makes him a student at Harvard. Those are different stories, but the shared academic setting is not a coincidence. Kepnes had told Gamble that she imagined Joe in a college environment. Gamble used that idea for the series; Kepnes used it to place Joe in a writing fellowship where other people could judge his work.
