Where the Crawdads Sing: Book vs. Movie
Olivia Newman’s 2022 film Where the Crawdads Sing adapts Delia Owens’s 2018 novel. Kya grows up alone in the North Carolina marshes, and a local man’s death brings her under suspicion.

The ending drops Kya's secret life as a poet
The book reveals that Kya wrote the poems published under the name Amanda Hamilton. After her death, Tate finds her poetry and the shell necklace she gave Chase. A poem about a female firefly luring a male to his death helps reveal that Kya killed Chase.
The movie keeps that final discovery but removes the Amanda Hamilton revelation. Tate finds the necklace among Kya's belongings, while her journal supplies pictures of Chase and a firefly. The evidence becomes visual rather than something he reads in a poem.
Newman said she never considered changing who killed Chase. She hoped the images and Kya's way of observing nature would carry some of what her poetry expresses in the book.

The movie brings the trial forward
The movie adapts Where the Crawdads Sing through its ending, but changes how the story gets there. Kya's trial comes late in the novel. The movie returns to the courtroom throughout, alternating the trial with scenes from her childhood and adult life.
Director Olivia Newman said she wanted to stay close to Kya while keeping the question of her guilt in play. The movie lets the two stories unfold together: her life before the arrest and the case being made against her.
