Each season so far adapts one book, in order

Season one follows The Terminal List, Jack Carr's first James Reece book. Season two moves on to the second, True Believer, which picks up with Reece in hiding after his revenge.

A guide, not an exact match: shows move scenes and storylines between books and seasons.

That leaves five James Reece books the series hasn't reached: Savage Son, The Devil's Hand, In the Blood, Only the Dead and Red Sky Mourning. Cry Havoc, a prequel about Reece's father, Tom, in Vietnam in 1968, hasn't been adapted either. Prime Video hasn't announced a third season.

The Terminal List: Dark Wolf (2025) is a separate prequel series about Ben Edwards, a character from the first book. It tells his story from before The Terminal List rather than adapting any one book, and Jack Carr created it with showrunner David DiGilio.

What changed from the book

Contains spoilersTap to show

Steve Horn dies much earlier in the series

In the book, Steve Horn, the story's main villain, lasts until the end. The series kills him in episode five. Showrunner David DiGilio said the change was there to surprise readers: they would still recognize the book's scenes, but they wouldn't know everything that was coming.

Katie Buranek has a bigger part in the series

Katie Buranek, the journalist played by Constance Wu, comes from the book, but the series gives her a much bigger part. DiGilio grew up around newsrooms, where his mother worked for years as a reporter and editor at The Washington Post. He said he kept Katie the journalist of integrity Carr wrote and gave her more to do.
