What changed from the book
Brooks gets a story that the book only briefly mentions
The movie adapts King's complete novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, collected in Different Seasons, and expands some of its smaller parts.
Brooks Hatlen is mentioned only briefly in the book. Frank Darabont made him a major character and followed his life outside prison. Darabont said he needed to show what institutionalization does to someone, so that Red's later experience would have more meaning.

The movie shows the reunion that the book leaves ahead

Producer Liz Glotzer pushed for the extra scene. Darabont's earlier ending had stopped with Red's journey, as the book does.
