Which books each season covers
Seven episodes cover the novel's complete story
| Season | Book adapted |

| 1 | The Queen's Gambit, from Beth's childhood through the novel's ending. The seven episodes adapt one complete book. |

Creator Scott Frank said a two-hour movie would have reduced the book to a sports story about whether Beth wins. A series gave him room for her relationships, addiction and the personal cost of her ability.
What changed from the book
Beth's two mothers get more of the story
The series adds flashbacks about Beth's birth mother and expands the role of Alma Wheatley, her adoptive mother. Those family histories receive more attention than they do in the novel.
Frank told Chess Life that he added material about the birth mother to suggest where Beth's own life could lead. Expanding Alma's part served a different purpose: it gave the story a wider emotional life beyond Beth's chess career.
How it was adapted
The same chess adviser worked on the book and the series
Bruce Pandolfini advised Tevis while he was writing the novel, then returned as a chess consultant for the series alongside Garry Kasparov. Frank credits Pandolfini with suggesting the book's title.
For the adaptation, the consultants helped develop the games and make the players' behavior convincing. In his interview with Pandolfini, Frank described planning each tournament around what it meant for Beth, then choosing how much of the board the audience needed to see.
