The Other Bennet Sister: Book vs. Series
The BBC’s 2026 series The Other Bennet Sister adapts Janice Hadlow’s 2020 novel. Both move overlooked Mary Bennet to the center of the story as she leaves familiar judgments behind and searches for a life of her own.

The Christmas special continues beyond the novel
| Season | Book and story covered |
|---|---|
| 1 | Hadlow's The Other Bennet Sister, through the novel's ending. Ten episodes. |
| Christmas special* | Three additional episodes written by Sarah Quintrell from new storylines supplied by Hadlow. A continuation, rather than another book. |
| A guide, not an exact match: shows move scenes and storylines between books and seasons. | |
* As of October 23, 2026, the three half-hour Christmas episodes have been announced and filming has finished. They have not aired.
The novel's main story is complete on screen. The first two episodes revisit Pride and Prejudice from Mary's perspective, as part of the adaptation of Hadlow's book. The rest follows the life Hadlow gives Mary beyond Austen's story.

Mary's moves between households are condensed
After Mr. Bennet dies, the book sends Mary through several relatives' homes before she settles in London. She stays with Jane and Bingley, tries Pemberley, then returns to Longbourn, where Mr. Collins and Charlotte now live.
The series brings much of that material together at Pemberley. Mary's intellectual friendship with Mr. Collins becomes a short library conversation there. The Gardiners' invitation to the Lake District also arrives at Pemberley, rather than being arranged during Mary's stay in London.

Mary takes a job, and Tom is already engaged
Mary goes to the Gardiners as a governess in the series. In the book, she stays with them as a guest. The adaptation gives her a job within the household as well as a place to live.
It also adds an obstacle to her relationship with Tom Hayward. The book's Tom is single. In the series, he is committed to Ann Baxter, a character who does not appear in Hadlow's novel.
