A football game between two Marine regiments on Guadalcanal brings together former college stars preparing for the invasion of Okinawa. Buzz Bissinger traces the players' paths from their families and campuses into wartime service, setting their sporting rivalry against the campaign ahead. The book follows both the men who survive and those whose athletic promise gives way to the losses of war.

John McLaughry, Bob Bauman, Tony Butkovich and David Schreiner leave college football behind to join the Marines after Pearl Harbor. Training and service in the Pacific place the young athletes in a world where physical talent cannot protect them from the demands of war. As they prepare for Okinawa, football offers a brief return to the competition and camaraderie they once knew.
