The Lucky One: Book vs. Movie
Scott Hicks’s The Lucky One (2012) is based on Nicholas Sparks’s 2008 novel. Zac Efron plays a Marine veteran searching for a woman he knows only from a photograph. Taylor Schilling plays Beth, the single mother he finds.

What changed from the book
The movie starts with Logan in Iraq
Sparks opens the book with Deputy Keith Clayton abusing his position during an encounter with young women by a creek. Logan enters that scene as a stranger Clayton wants to question. The movie starts earlier in Logan’s life, showing the war and the photograph he finds there.
Scott Hicks said the opening needed to establish Logan’s experience of war and his difficulty communicating afterward. The book supplies that history after introducing him through Clayton’s suspicious eyes. The movie lets us see it before Beth meets him.
Logan’s search ends in Louisiana instead of North Carolina
The movie adapts the novel’s main love story through its conclusion in one film. It moves Beth’s home from Hampton, North Carolina, to Louisiana.
Hicks said he wanted a setting that distinguished the movie from earlier Sparks adaptations. He also shortened the account of Logan’s walk across the country. Rather than following the journey at length, the movie lets Beth discover how far he has traveled when they meet. Hicks wanted the distance to surprise us along with her.
