How much of the book it covers
The movie sequel does not adapt Revenge Wears Prada
The 2006 movie adapts Weisberger's first novel as a complete story, with substantial changes. The book continues in Revenge Wears Prada, where Andy and Emily have started a magazine together.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 (2026) follows the movie characters in a new story. Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna has confirmed that it is not an adaptation of Revenge Wears Prada.

Andy's departure becomes a choice about Miranda's values
The movie leaves out the larger story of Lily's downward spiral from the novel. It builds Andy's decision to leave around Miranda sacrificing Nigel's opportunity to protect her own position.
When Andy objects, Miranda points out that Andy has already displaced Emily to get ahead. McKenna said Andy throws her phone away because she rejects that way of treating people, not simply because she has had enough of a difficult boss.
How it was adapted
Miranda's sweater speech grew from a few lines
The speech about Andy's blue sweater began as a few lines in an earlier screenplay. McKenna gradually expanded it to explain how the fashion industry reaches people who think they have nothing to do with it.
Meryl Streep asked for more. McKenna wrote several versions and offered three possible shades of blue; Streep chose cerulean. McKenna said the point was to explain why the people working at Runway take their work seriously. Director David Frankel has also said he wanted the movie to show Miranda's expertise and work ethic alongside her treatment of other people.
