A guide, not an exact match: shows move scenes and storylines between books and seasons.

The central mystery is complete. The book continues beyond the series’ final revelation, rather than supplying a separate case for another season.

What changed from the book

Contains spoilersTap to show

Camille’s hospital roommate becomes a much larger part of her story

The book gives Camille an unnamed teenage roommate during her psychiatric treatment. The girl dies after drinking cleaning fluid. The series develops that brief history into Alice, a friend whose death returns throughout Camille’s memories.

Their shared listening gives Camille’s music another part to play in the story. It recalls a relationship the series has shown, rather than merely accompanying her drive home. Alice’s place in Camille’s past is expanded, but the death itself was not invented for television.

The book stays with Camille after the final discovery

The novel continues after Amma is exposed, explaining her motives and showing Camille in Curry and Eileen’s care. The series replaces that longer aftermath with brief images of the murders during the credits.

Flynn said the compression helped keep viewers from anticipating another revelation after Adora’s arrest.

Camille Preaker returns to her hometown on a reporting assignment and moves into her mother Adora’s carefully maintained house. As she follows a detective’s investigation into attacks on local girls, encounters with former classmates and her younger half sister Amma draw her back into old patterns of drinking and self-harm. The story she is pursuing becomes inseparable from the family memories she struggles to keep at a distance.
