Halliday's contest gets a new set of challenges
The movie takes the first book's contest through its conclusion, but changes the tasks required to finish it. It does not combine the story with Ready Player Two, Cline's later sequel.
Screenwriter Zak Penn said he and Cline agreed early that the book's gates and challenges needed to change. Penn restructured the story to cut between the real world and the OASIS, while Spielberg shortened the time over which the story unfolds.
What changed from the book
Wade meets the others much earlier
In the novel, Wade's relationships with the other players stay online until very late in the story. The movie brings them together in person earlier.
Cline said moving beyond Wade's first-person account let the adaptation involve the other characters sooner. He also wanted Samantha, who plays as Art3mis, and the other members of the High Five to have more agency in the story.

The Shining becomes an adventure instead of a performance to copy
The book's movie challenges require Wade to reproduce familiar performances. For the adaptation, Penn and Cline built a new challenge inside The Shining.
Penn said they wanted the characters to have an adventure there, rather than simply repeat a movie they knew. They developed the sequence around looking beyond obsessive familiarity with a work. Aech's failure to recognize its dangers is part of that changed task.
