A guide, not an exact match: shows move scenes and storylines between books and seasons.

The television ending comes before the final book

The eighth season gives the series its own ending. Gabaldon's tenth and final main book, A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out, remains unpublished and unadapted. The producers consulted her about their ending, but it does not present the completed ending of her book series.

What changed from the book

Murtagh lives longer in the series

Murtagh dies at Culloden in Voyager. The series lets him survive and later puts him among the Regulators in North Carolina. He dies at Alamance in season five, fighting on the opposite side from Jamie. That part of Jamie's conflict with his godfather was written for television.

Season two delays the book's opening

Dragonfly in Amber opens in 1968 with Claire, Brianna, and Roger. The series saves those scenes for the season finale. It opens instead with Claire's earlier return to Frank, using material from Voyager. It also gives Brianna and Roger more of the investigation that Claire sets in motion in the book.
