One Day: Book vs. Series
Nicole Taylor’s 2024 series One Day adapts David Nicholls’s 2009 novel. After meeting at university, Emma and Dexter remain connected as their lives unfold, revisited on the same date across the years.

Which books each season covers
The yearly chapters become fourteen episodes
The series keeps the book’s July 15 visits, but it does not give every year an episode of its own. Episodes vary in length, and the later ones bring several years together.
| Season | Book adapted | How much it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 1, limited series | One Day | The complete main story, including its aftermath, across fourteen episodes. |
| A guide, not an exact match: shows move scenes and storylines between books and seasons. | ||
There is no further installment of the book left for another season. The 2011 movie is a separate adaptation of the same novel.
Like the book, the series often skips the occasions another love story might build toward. Important events happen between the annual visits. Director Molly Manners said the aim was to show Emma and Dexter’s responses to what had happened, rather than stage every event itself.

The book saves more of their first day for the end
Both versions end by returning to Emma and Dexter’s first meeting. The book holds back their Arthur’s Seat walk and parting kiss until those closing pages. The series shows much of that day in its first episode, then returns to it in the finale with conversation and a kiss it has not shown before.
Nicole Taylor said she deliberately saved some of that early encounter so Emma could be present in the final episode after her death. The return to Edinburgh comes from the book, but the series divides what we learn about that day between its opening and ending.

Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew spend a night together after university, then set off with very different expectations of adult life. Returning to them on July 15 each year, the novel traces the friendship they keep renewing through unsatisfying jobs, public success, other relationships, and the difficulty of recognizing what they mean to each other.

Dexter moves easily toward travel and a television career, while Emma’s plans to become a writer run up against disappointing work and insecurity. A night together at the end of university becomes the beginning of a lasting friendship, but keeping a place in each other’s lives grows difficult as success, grief, and other partners change what they can offer.
