How it was adapted

Rooney helped turn the book's thoughts into dialogue

The book tells what Marianne and Connell think, including things they cannot say to each other. The series turns some of that narration into dialogue. The writers also move and reshape material to make scenes out of events described inside the characters' heads.

Rooney wrote the first six episodes with Alice Birch and contributed to the later scripts. Mark O'Rowe also wrote for the series. Filming and editing brought further changes. The published script book follows the finished episodes, including changes made after the shooting drafts.

The producers decided against extra stories for supporting characters

The production considered adding stories about other characters, including Connell's mother, Lorraine. It kept the twelve episodes focused on Marianne and Connell instead. Producer Ed Guiney described the roughly half-hour episodes as a way to follow particular moments in their lives without needing more plot to fill an hour.

At school, Connell keeps his involvement with Marianne hidden from his friends, though their conversations give him a closeness he finds nowhere else. Moving into university and adult relationships, the pair repeatedly struggle with what goes unsaid between them, as shame, depression, and family experiences affect their ability to remain together.
