David Grann investigates the murders of Osage people whose Oklahoma oil rights make them targets in the 1920s. Following Mollie Burkhart's family and the federal inquiry led by Tom White, he traces how racism, financial exploitation and local corruption obstruct the search for justice. His own archival research extends the inquiry beyond the crimes that reach court.

Returning from war, Ernest Burkhart settles near his uncle in Oklahoma and courts Mollie, an Osage woman whose family receives substantial oil income. As their marriage takes shape, deaths among Mollie's relatives and neighbors become increasingly difficult to dismiss as coincidence. Ernest's dependence on his uncle places him inside a network of schemes aimed at acquiring Osage wealth.
