Gossip Girl: Books vs. Series
Gossip Girl (2007–2012), developed by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, is based on Cecily von Ziegesar’s novels. The series follows Manhattan’s wealthy teenagers as an anonymous blogger exposes their relationships, rivalries, and family secrets.

Which books each season covers
Six seasons do not follow six books
The first Gossip Girl novel supplied the starting point and characters. The series soon developed its own plots. Von Ziegesar has described the show as separate from her books, while noting that the writers continued to borrow small moments from them.
| Season | Relationship to the books |
|---|---|
| 1 | Starts from Gossip Girl, book 1, then adds and changes stories rather than adapting the next books in order. |
| 2 | Continues the TV stories with the novel characters. It is not an adaptation of book 2, You Know You Love Me. |
| 3 | Develops the characters' college lives for television. It is not an adaptation of book 3, All I Want Is Everything. |
| 4 | Continues the TV stories rather than adapting a particular later novel. |
| 5 | Continues the TV stories, including changes in who controls the gossip blog. It does not follow a single novel. |
| 6 | Supplies the TV characters' conclusion and resolves the show's narrator mystery. It does not adapt the books' final installment. |
| A guide, not an exact match: shows move scenes and storylines between books and seasons. | |
Books 2–11, from You Know You Love Me to Don't You Forget About Me, have not been turned into an ordered sequence of season adaptations. Nor do the later seasons provide complete adaptations of the prequel It Had to Be You, the college-reunion book I Will Always Love You or Gossip Girl, Psycho Killer.
There is also a forthcoming adult continuation, Blair. As of October 19, 2026, its publisher lists it for June 2027. It follows the book character as an adult; it is not the source of the already completed TV series.

The identity revealed in the finale belongs to the show
The series reveals Dan as Gossip Girl. That is not a solution carried over from the novels. Von Ziegesar has described the books' Gossip Girl as an omniscient narrator and an extension of herself as the writer.
Executive producer Stephanie Savage said the TV writers debated whether to reveal the identity at all. They did not ask Penn Badgley to play Dan with that secret in mind throughout the series.

Blair has her own list of people she would like to eliminate and refuses to let Serena outdo her. This slasher reimagining of the first Gossip Girl novel turns their social rivalry into a competition with a growing body count.
