High above Who-ville, the Grinch dreads the noise and celebration of Christmas morning. Convinced he can stop the holiday by taking away everything the Whos have prepared, he disguises himself as Santa Claus and recruits his dog, Max, for a night of theft. Cindy Lou Who wants to understand why the Grinch lives apart from Whoville and persuades the town to include him in its Christmas festivities. The invitation brings old humiliations back to the surface instead of settling them. Retreating to his mountain, the Grinch devises a plan to take away the presents, decorations and food that seem to matter so much to the Whos.
