How much of the book it covers

Garland rewrote the first book as a standalone story

The movie uses Annihilation, the first Southern Reach book, but gives its expedition a different course and ending. It does not combine it with Authority, Acceptance or the later Absolution.

Writer-director Alex Garland began with an unpublished copy of the first book. He said he was trying to adapt the dreamlike experience of reading it, rather than reproduce its events closely. He also told VanderMeer that he did not know how to make a faithful version. VanderMeer gave him room to take that approach.

What changed from the book

The expedition loses its hypnosis and gains personal histories

The book identifies the explorers by their jobs. The movie gives them names, changes the team's makeup and adds histories involving grief, addiction and self-harm.

The psychologist also loses her control over the others through hypnosis. In the book, "annihilation" is a command intended to make an expedition member kill herself. The movie connects the title with transformation inside the Shimmer instead.

Lena returns where the book's biologist stays

The book ends with the biologist staying in Area X to look for her husband. The movie sends Lena out after an encounter with a figure that mirrors her movements.

The man who returned as Kane admits he is not her husband, then asks whether she is Lena. She embraces him without answering. Garland wrote this ending without using the later books.

A biologist joins three other women on an expedition into Area X, an isolated landscape that has defeated earlier attempts to understand it. Their instructions call for observation and careful records, but a strange underground structure makes those rules inadequate. As trust within the group breaks down, the biologist pursues discoveries she cannot safely explain.

Biologist and former soldier Lena joins a team entering the Shimmer, an expanding zone from which her husband has returned gravely ill. Beyond its boundary, plants and animals are changing in ways that make ordinary survival skills unreliable. As the team heads toward a lighthouse at the phenomenon's center, Lena searches for an explanation while concealing her personal connection to the mission.
